UAE Declares 2016 as Year of Reading

Goals
Sheikh Khalifa declared 2016 as the Reading Year to prepare an integrated reading strategy, produce a reading generation and establish the UAE as the capital of knowledge and cultural content. Realizing the significance of instilling the habit of reading in the people, particularly children, Sheikh Mohammed implemented Sheikh Khalifa's orders.

Problems
Failing to learn how to read is considered a globally critical problem. Therefore, ending illiteracy is one of the Millennium Development Goals. Sheikh Mohammed warned of "the reading crisis in the Arab World" and the crucial need to solve it, since the numbers of the illiterate are "shocking!"

Solutions
The Arab Reading Challenge was a solution to encourage to make reading a part of their daily routine. Similar initiatives in schools and universities, supplying million books to schools, and participating in local book fairs all help with combatting illiteracy.
